The Iraq war veteran, Megan Leavey is now able to adopt her one-time military partner, Rex, a 10-year-old German Shepard. The former Marine Cpl. from Rockland County had been trying to adopt the canine for some time — her initial requests were denied because Rex was still active but, recently he was diagnosed with facial palsy and can no longer serve on the battlefield.
With help from Sen. Charles Schumer, who wrote letters to chief military staffers and began a national circulated petition requesting adoption, Leavey will soon see her old friend once again.
Schumer wasn’t the only person to come to the veteran’s aid — 20,000 people signed the petition.
