 New York State came in first with the highest gas taxes in the country, according to January figures collected by the American Petroleum Institute. The state charges five separate taxes per gallon of fuel, which adds up to 34.06 cents on a gas pump price of $3.90 a gallon.

When filling up, some New Yorker’s have fled to New Jersey  — avoiding the state’s steep prices.
